PURPOSE: To serve Co-op Partners' customers by sourcing product of optimal quality and competitive pricing; to support sales efforts by providing appropriate products for promotion; to maintain excellent relationships with vendors and other business partners.


REPORTS TO: Senior Purchasing Manager





  • Stay up to date on market availability on all products
  • Determine need for each product based on:
    • Seasonality, availability, price point, customer interest, program and content development
    • Regular consultation with Sales Director on trends, requests and feedback from customers
  • Purchase product from vendors/farmers
  • Arrange transportation for product as necessary
  • Prepare purchase orders for all incoming product, communicating with receivers as necessary
  • Keep sales and warehouse updated with product arrival times by maintaining contact with transportation brokers
  • Upon receipt of product, notify vendors of any quality or pack issues; arrange for credit. Make decisions on sub-standard product. Work with receivers and QC team as needed.


Pricing/Promotions Management

  • Manage retail store promotional items purchasing and pricing
  • Price product to maintain target margin goals
  • Coordinate pricing with other buyers for organizational consistency
  • Keep informed on competition, as well as aging inventory, and adjust pricing if needed
  • Provide regular updates to sales team on new items, product availability and promotional opportunities


Inventory Control

  • Maintain accurate daily inventory of product, including product on hand, due in and on future order
  • Assist Marketing w/ maintaining accurate representation of produce items (pack, label, origin) in Taura system and in all publications
  • Adjust inventory to reflect lost or spoiled product, changes in pack, etc.



  • Maintain positive industry image of Co-op Partners
  • Treat vendors, drivers, farmers and all business associates with respect
  • Keep up to date on industry topics of law, organic certification, trends, business buy-outs and other issues that might affect our business



  • Knowledge of produce and produce industry required
  • At least 4 years experience purchasing fresh produce
  • Background in organic industry and experience purchasing organic produce preferred
  • Strong organizational skills required
  • Good communication skills
  • Experience in setting up retail produce promotions, including short and long-term forecasting
  • Ability to use ERP reporting tools and advanced Excel spreadsheets



  • Ability to work with computers and computer software systems
  • Vision corrected
  • Fluent English reading, writing and speaking
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • Function in a cold environment (34 degrees) for short periods
